Boxing set for big impact in SA with launch of 2020 season
Boxing South Australia will launch its biggest year yet this weekend, hosting a state tournament in Adelaide on Saturday 22 February 2020.
The Olympic sport has grown rapidly in South Australia in the last two years, with Boxing SA and it’s 52 registered boxing clubs across the state focused on developing high performance athletes, elite coaches and a thriving community.
Ms Goodes, who enters her tenth year in the voluntary role of President of Boxing SA, said the not-for-profit organisation’s focus is on much more than just boxing.
“We’ve worked really hard to create a safe, family friendly environment, and that has translated into sellout crowds and great feedback from members, attendees and also community leaders who can see a tangible positive impact, especially with young people who have really embraced the sport in recent years,” she said.
“This weekend’s tournament will feature Fred Zziwa, a promising Ugandan boxer who hopes that building a career in boxing will enable him to remain in South Australia. It is about so much more than just the results in the ring.”
There will be 20 bouts at the event with competitors from Queensland, Northern Territory and Tasmania joining local athletes across junior, male and female categories.
“We’re really proud to showcase a wide range of athletes from such diverse backgrounds, and many have the goal of making a boxing career at national or even Olympic level,” Ms Goodes said.
“We’re expecting another full house of passionate fans supporting this sport which is on the rise.”
